Welcome to yis Elementary School
Students at YIS love their school and look forward to learning and interacting with their friends and teachers from all over the world.
At YIS we offer a comprehensive, inquiry-based curriculum that provides pre-school and elementary students with opportunities to develop skills, knowledge and understandings to help them become citizens of the future. This is provided through the International Baccalaureate’s (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP), a curriculum designed to meet the needs of young learners in an international school setting. In developing and planning for programmes at YIS, we recognise that:
- Students in an international school bring a diverse set of experiences and cultures into the classroom to share.
- Students can have different approaches to learning.
- Not all students progress at the same rate.
- Students benefit greatly from the diversity which exists in our school.
Our focus is the development of the whole child in all areas of learning. Children are nurtured in their social and emotional development, as well as encouraged in their academic, sporting and artistic development. The PYP curriculum promotes the integration of essential skills, values and attitudes across all curriculum areas. It challenges students to become active and thoughtful inquirers about the world in which they live.
The curriculum is delivered through Units of Inquiry and is founded upon a guided inquiry approach. Teachers carefully guide students as they inquire into the content areas of science culture, history, geography and the environment. The units are developmentally sequential from ELC to Grade 5.
