Welcome to YIS High School

To all visitors to our website, I extend a very warm welcome to our High School. YIS is rich in history, dating back to the fall of 1924, but our High School section is still relatively young. Our first cohort group of Grade 9 students began classes in the fall of 1969. Most of these students went on to graduate as ‘the Class of 1973’ (a class of only nine students that year). Since then, we have graduated over a thousand students and our graduating classes have continually grown in number, reaching over 50 in recent years.

Despite this growth, YIS has still maintained its family atmosphere and this friendliness permeates throughout the school. We have also continued to build on the school’s excellent reputation worldwide, and we remain committed to providing an international education of the highest standards of academic excellence maintained by highly qualified and knowledgeable teachers. Keeping abreast of change and innovative educational trends maintains our cutting-edge position. YIS High School graduates are well prepared for higher education at leading colleges and universities around the world, and our alumni have achieved success in a variety of careers and endeavors.

Our academic programmes in High School, involving IGCSE in Grades 9 and 10 and the International Baccalaureate Diploma in Grades 11 and 12, provide not only rigour and challenge, but depth, breadth and variety across all disciplines. Choices in the arts, the sciences, the social sciences and languages are extensive, and our co-curricular offerings, including our outreach programmes both locally and globally, as well as our sports, arts and other extracurricular programmes provide students with a wide array of enriching experiences and opportunities. IGCSE external examinations are normally taken at the end of Grade 10 (on average seven subjects per student) and all students are encouraged to start the IB Diploma Programme in Grade 11.

With a student body comprising over 40 nationalities and faculty from 15 nationalities, supported by various programmes and a culture rich in diversity, YIS offers a well-balanced international education. Our curriculum, student-centered approach to both teaching and learning, philosophy and mission all add in promoting the learning process in an international context. Aspiring to instill the qualities embodied in the IB Learner Profile, we help students to become good communicators, open-minded, principled, inquirers, knowledgeable, thinkers, caring citizens, risk-takers, balanced and reflective.

As a High School student of YIS, wonderful opportunities will come your way. Often, the challenge is choosing the right balance with all that is on offer. Whatever your interest, there will always be something that you can become involved in.

As a final note, I always look forward to welcoming visitors to the school, particularly meeting our alumni and former families and talking of the past, present and future. We all share something in common; the experience of being part of a great school!

Best wishes to you all.

Dennis Stanworth M.A. (Int. Ed.)
High School Principal

By maintaining a sound system of education you produce citizens of good character, and citizens of sound character, with the advantage of a good education, produce in turn children better than themselves and better able to produce still better children in their turn. (Plato)

Work is the scourge of man but only too often is the essence of life. (Stanworth)

Members of the YIS community are warmly invited to hear Dr. Jane Goodall’s presentation on her pioneering chimpanzee research and inspiring vision for our future.
On Thursday August 19th, YIS officially opened its new library in the middle building.
