The Arts

The Arts play a prominent role at YIS, both as an integral part of the curriculum - from the Early Learning Center up through High School - as well as through a broad range of clubs and activities that excite students' imaginations and give them numerous opportunities for creative expression.

In Elementary School,  the Arts are viewed by the Primary Years Programme as a form of expression that is inherent in all cultures, a powerful means to assist in the development of the whole child and important for interpreting and understanding the world.  Our Arts curriculum at this level focuses on Drama, Music and Visual Art, offered through single-subject courses but developed in conjunction with the PYP Units of Inquiry. See our Elementary School curriculum for further details.

This approach continues in our Middle School and High School, where we offer an extensive range of courses in Drama and Theatre Arts , Music (including Instrumental, Vocal and Japanese Music), and Visual Arts that enable students to hone their skills and expand their horizons. Performance opportunities abound, including school plays and seasonal concerts held at the Tanner Auditorium as well as concert halls and other venues around Yokohama. Students also have the opportunity to participate in a variety of music and drama festivals with other schools in the Kanto area and beyond.
